calling all metal halide heads

Any studies done on testing the values of various 175 watters? Thinking of dropping down to a 14k or is there a 12k reeflux in 175? now that I I just got my tek retro from reefgeek, I wanted to supplement the halide to save a few pennies, probably gonna drop the light cycle from 7 to 5 hours now just in time with the warmer weather headed our way too but would like a good par bulb to compensate looking for a very blue 10k or whiter 14k and will be supplementing with Geismann's actinic+ T5 HO.

I'm pretty stoked, been wanting to do this for some time now as I like the blue of the 20k but alone cannot stimulate the whole tank like I like but rather just the "hot spots". And with just enough space to supplement with one bulb next to the MH, I'll be able to use the other bulb to light a up a fuge down below for some serious exportation, with a tek reflector and firing a GE 6500k I'll be able to grow the chaeto faster and get the ball of it out of my display.

Input and suggestions are highly welcome :)

I don't think I understand what you are asking currently and will chalk it up to my 3rd grade reading level. Hooked on Phonics was a rip off I tell you......

Marine Depot has a good selection of the most popular brands:

And here is Sanjays site:
http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/index.htm

And did I read this correctly.....the pariah of T5s bought MH? What is the world comming to and are there any heros left?

You may want to look into the 14K Ushio to start with.....

Check this out..
T5's on the SPS

Guess what's on the 30g softies and LPS needing more light?
:lol2:

Last I heard sanjay pretty much covered the ins and outs with the 250's and 400's but left us 150-175'rs on a hope and prayer:hmm2:

I'll check it out again, thanks :)

The Iwasaki 14k is supposed to have some serious PAR value for a 175W bulb, Justin. I'd look into that one first and foremost;)

Nice! Ya, those studies werent done last I checked. Only thing Im trippin on is that I had always thought that AB's,Iwasaki's and Ushio's needed the m137 pulse start ballast and not the universal probe start m57 like I have which fires all the "american bulbs" like hami's and xm's, was this not taken into consideration?

My ballast is an Advance and as far as numbers regarding color index, par and efficiency looks like AB or Iwasaki, do you mean the 15k? Or do they have both 14, and 15?

Thanks for the help guys.

Forgot about that one.......

I was running into the same sort of bulb selection problems with 150DEs and part of the reason I upped to 250s.

Sanjay did have a few articles written on the 150s and 175s which may help that are on his site. This as well, if you hadn't seen it: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-03/sj/index.php

Good link Doug, it confirmed what I was talking about, and contradicts some of the listings on his sight. Ushio's and AB's should be fired on the pulse start for consistant firing. So for the ballast I have the brightest and most efficient is looking like the Iwasaki, although if I was growing any SPS I'd be very tempted to reach for the blue, I mean Coralvue's Reeflux ;)

Very helpfull, thanks again guys.
