Hi,

I have a new tang in QT, and I want to make sure he dosn't introduce Ich into my tank. He appears to be healty, and shows no signs of Ich. Do I treat him as if he has Ich, or do I just watch for signs, and only treat if signs appear?

Just wanted to know how tang owners deal with their Ich magnets. :)

I usually QT all fish for 4-6 weeks and never treat until signs show. If you want to be sure that no ich is introduced then I suggest treating with Hypo for 6 weeks in QT and then add fish to the display. Try avoid using copper as you run the risk of killing the fish before you help it.

What kind of Tang?
I don't treat unless nessesary. Some Tangs are more prone to ich such as the Hippo and the Ancanthuras species..if one of those be ready. Ich can take up to 2 weeks to show itself

I never treat period. qt is one thing but I don't treat make sure you have the proper enviroment for the fish and there should be no major stress issues. also what size tanks do you qt tangs in?

The tang in question is a Kole. I've only had him one week, and he is very shy. He is eating, so I feel good about this.

I thought all tangs were ick magnets. And I don't want ick.

The only concern I have right now is the tip of his tail is clear. Not chewed like fin rot, but clear. Anybody know what this might be? I've never seen this before.

Tangs aren't ich magnets, they are just more sensitive to poor ownership. They get a bad rap b/c of the people who try and keep them. Some of the time, the damage is done by the wholesaler and reseller before they get to the hobbist.

Find a good dealer who does a good job before you get the fish and keep on doing the right things and you will be fine.

Ummmm....Yes, Tangs are ich magnets, it doesn't matter who has them..Ich is a parasite not an infection from bad water

Koles are usually 'clean' upon capture..unfortunatly you don't know what it has been exposed to. I would hold off on treatment

Had it been a Hippo or Powder Blue, I may have told you to start reducing salinity slowly and get ready;)
