Came home to a burning smell

Was working on my tank last night and forgot to move my lights back to its original place. Well you can only guess what happened. Thankfully it didn't burn down my house.

I think the integrity of the tank is still good but who knows. Just hoping for the best.

Don't worry, you aren't the first one to do this. I know a local reefer that had a MH light hanging from a wooden shelf and he would put it up on the shelf while working in the tank with the light turned off. He placed the light up on the shelf and then forgot to put it down again so it cooked a nice brown spot into the shelf. Luckily, it too was caught in time before a fire.

Glad you didn't have anything worse happen.

I managed to pull the plastic up a bit while it was still warm. Luckily I still have my tank. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one to do something like this.

Wow that sucks, good you found it though. I think I would order new trim. My 55 had a broken brace and man did that glass bow. Just a little slack in that cross brace would make me nervous.

I had a cheap uv ballast burned up on me. woke my wife and I when the smoke detector went off at 4 in the morning. ran all around the house looking, then saw the fire shadow through my tanks cabinet doors. opened them up and fire, fire, fire. put it out with water (dummy..electrical fire). anyways....took the tank down, moved the fish, cleaned and painted the wall. lesson learned! Im just glad we were home!

That sounds like a familiar story :)

LOL... I try not to name any names but if you would like to claim that story feel free to do so.

wow man that sucks... but a fish tank can always be replaced, your family cant. im very glad no one was hurt! :)

Yeah talked to the wife today, and she stated if that tank busted you would be pretty ****ed wouldn't you? I told her that there are more important things in life to be concerned with than to be ****ed about losing some fish and corals. But I am however glad that there wasn't more damage to anything other than that brace. Lesson learned, now I have to do something about all the wire splicing that I did setting up my tank :).
