I have a 7-8 inch gigas clam that I have had for about 7 months. Everything was going perfect except one day I noticed the left side of its mantle retracted. Upon further inspection the the mantle on the retracted side looked damaged almost eaten. I didnt know what to make of this since none of my fish I have ever seen mess or even pick at my clams ( I have two croceas in the tank as well).
The clam started healing normally and the damaged mantle was almost completely healed when I now noticed its siphon eaten almost completley off.
I believe this damage is occurring at night and think it could only be a pair of camel shrimp my wife mistakenly introduced into the aquarium as peppermint shrimp.
Has anyone every heard of camel shrimp attacking a clam? There are no other pests in the tank.
I have two dwarf angels but have never seen them peck at the clam and my copper banded butterfly doesnt either. We monitor the tank closely and never see any of the fish attack the clam.
Thanks
Eric
