would a zoom lens from a traditional 35mm camera work on the new digital SLRs? Have a Canon zoom lens and looking at buying a Canon SLR - will that lens just attach and work?

Is it an FD mount lens? You will have to buy a special adapter for it. You will probably loose auto focus and maybe even metering or aperture control.

Canon has 4 mounts that I know of:
FL "Super-Old School film", FD "Old School film", EF "Current Film and digital", EF-S "Current digital"

EF came about mainly to standardize auto focus. They are currently the standard Canon mount, fitting all current Canon film and digital SLR's. Only a select few FD mount lenses had the capability of auto focus and changing the mount opened the flood gates for new technology. Adapters are available to join FD lenses and EF camera but there will be a very large hit to image quality. Instead of simply connecting the two mounts together, the adapter must act as its own lens to battle distortions created between the two rival mounts. In the end it usually isn't pretty.

I suggest you buy all new lenses. If you are determined to use your FD mount lenses, get a Canon AE-1. It might even be the same camera you owned back in the day/still own, but it can still do the job.

any thoughts on a good canon camera in the 500 to 600 range?

I checked and the lens I have says EF on it, so I think that's a good thing.

If it's an EF mount lens, and it sounds like it is, it will fit on any currently available Canon DSLR. Take a peak at the DSLR sticky at the top of this forum. It'll help with the selection process.

Cheers
