Camera?

$600 w/18-55 VR LENS. I also added the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX LENS.

I'm a Canon guy, never used a Nikon. I recently purchased a Canon XSi to replace an old film body. I stuck with Canon because I already had some lenses and a flash that could be used with the new body. The XSi also got good reviews on dpreview.com. I have been very impressed with the XSi to date and the price was right for a 12 MP camera. Still learning a lot, but the new camera has rekindled my interest in photography. Next a purchase will be a good macro lens.

Regardless of what you buy use a reputable dealer. I'm amazed at how many crooks are selling cameras. I too love BH Photo, but recently have used Adorama.

Also keep in mind that it is nice to have a decent tripod when doing macro work.
I have a nice tripod for my mini dv video camera.

Explain why it's ok to use a lens without VR.

The VR (like Shake Reduction on my Pentax) is a useful "extra". It allows a little extra forgiveness when taking some shots. I have found it most useful in that it allows me a little extra exposure time if needed for certain shots. Put a camera on a tripod with a macro and I doubt you would ever notice a difference. It will make some handheld shots easier but not a great degree.
My Pentax has "VR" on the body so any lens I use automatically gains it. But I have often mistakenly left the VR off and never even noticed in the results.
Maybe a Nikon user can give you specifics, but I don't know if it worth the extra money. My SR is very similar to the VR and while nice, it is just not the necessary in my opinion.
Of course that all goes out the door if the $800 isn't that big a deal to you.
Also, I'm sure you have read this before, but keep in mind that the focal length of these lenses is not the same on digital SLR's as they are on film cameras. I'm not sure of the exact ratio for the D60, but that 105mm will be closer to 150mm on your camera.

memories, my first 35mm camera was a Nikon FT2, gosh did I love that camera. I still have it! That was 1976,wow, am I dating myself.

I would check out the D60. It is a newer camera and appears to be better for the same price or less.

I dont know .... This is a nice place to check for details:

D80:

A little overwhelming but I will keep checking. It is a lot of money so I need to do my home work first. ....... group buy? :D
