Can An Anemone Kill SPS?

I had a tank crash a few months ago and lost all my sps. I was very upset and didn't know what to think because all my conditions were pretty good and there was even a period of explosive growth.

But then everything went downhill. My acros then my birdnest then finally my nice monti cap.

At the same time I noticed my anemone was withering away do to my ignorance and not knowing it needed to be fed.

After analzying everything I researched and found that anemone's release toxins that can poison the tank.

Could this have killed my sps? I know they are very sensitive and may have been impacted by the situation.

do you run GAC ?


I do have alot of anemones, and they do TRY to kill SPS when they touch, sometimes the SPS is stronger (the plate coral) and the anemone retracts and moves away from it.

no Ill effects but I think its cause I run too much GAC 24/7

Nope, I was only running GFO and some Chemi-Pure Elite for phosphate issues so carbon wasn't high on my list. Bad mistake I guess.

post hoc ergo propter hoc... It sounds to me like your tank was not happy in general and both SPS and anemone were on a downhill slide together. You can get a away without feeding an anemone for a looong time and thats probably not what caused its death.

But to answer your question, if your anemone was dying first, it most certainly could affect your SPS and kill them. Especially in a smaller tank not running carbon.

How old is your tank? How big? How often do you do water changes?

Chemi Pure contains GAC. but it may have been used up in ure tank already.
I change GAC every 3 weeks religiously lo



but Mike is right, I havent fed my anemones for like a year lol and they are growing and looking sharp (I gues they do take a mysis here and therewhen I feed the fish, but no target feeding.)

My current tank is 37 gallons so not very big. I've had it for about a year and a half or so. And to reply my sps were doing fine and that's what puzzled me. The anemone was not doing so hot and then I realized my corals were going downhill too. It wasn't just my sps it was my zoas who were very hardy as well as such mushrooms. Everything just looked like crap and eventually died. I have had two anemones die and I was wondering what I was doing wrong. I researched that feeding was necessary and now I feed my rbta anemone every other day and it looks great.

See my anemone was doing one catching brine shrimp from feeding the fish but then I switched to a flake food automated system and my anemone got no food and then withered away.

Id say it sounds like it was your nem then, what kind of anemone was it? Some are more toxic than others.
