can an open brain sit on bare bottom?

or do they need a sand bed to hide their "foot" or whatever you call it? i had mine in sand for quite awhile and it was fine. i removed the sand a almost 2 months ago because i thought it was contributing to a nitrate problem. now for the past few days it hasnt been happy. i'm just wondering if it needs to sit in sand or on a pvc ring (i've seen that before)...?

thanks

I have always been told that sitting these on the sand bed is not good for the coral as it can produce rotting to the underside?? Worthwhile putting it on a pvc ring IMO.

i have my greep and red open brains on BB. they look better than they did in the sand. no critters to get to them (worms etc)
