So my little brother surprised me with 2 of these little (.5 inch) guys yesterday in a small water bottle. They're currently in my frag tank as my QT wasnt up and running. Anyone know what they are?

As you can see my frag tank is empty right now. All the frags are in the DT, figured I could place a frag or 2 in there to see if they will eat it. Seems like if I keep them fed well it wont be an issue. I might just be better off getting rid of them.

I think a bit more questioning is in order.

The OP shows that they live in New Jersey - I heard from an aquarist in New York, that seasonal tropical "waifs" are already showing up in these waters...notably very small Chaetodon ocellatus. So, given the location, and that the fish arrived in a water bottle (implying self-collected) I'm pretty certain that this fish is a juvenile spotfin butterflyfish, besides, that's what it looks like, juvenile sedentarius have white pelvic fins, not yellow like in the image.

While C. sedentarius are NOT obligate coral-feeders (they are actually more zooplanktivores, and do very well in captivity) C. ocellatus are a problem feeder, they aren't obligate coral feeders either, but they just don't adapt to prepared foods well. My guess is that they feed on feather dusters, urchin tube feet, or other esoteric foods in the wild.

So - jmaneyapanda is correct, these little guys need almost constant food, I would try HUFA enriched live baby brine shrimp, maybe live tubifex (black) worms, maybe mussel on the half shell.

Good luck, but these can be real heartbreakers......

I also posted this on a local forum and someone posted up a pic of a juvi spotfin that was pretty much dead on. I passed by a LFS today but they wont have any live brine shrimp untill tomorrow. What is HUFA? I'll try mussel, they aren't treated with anything of concern when you see them in a supermarket right?

Maybe have your brother take it back to the ocean, and let it live on what it's supposed to eat? Sad to see such cute little things that probably won't make it.

Jay is correct, it's a Spotfin - Chaetodon ocellatus, not a C. sedentarius. Was using my cell phone, looking at a 1" x 1" picture... :spin2:

Pretty good considering Auroradrvr lol. Thanks for the help guys and if it were me on the beach they would still be in the ocean unless I knew what they were and more about them. Luckily I have a few tanks in my system that I can keep them in while they mature a bit.

Sorry Jay, I forgot to add that it is a spot fin butterfly, that's what I get for growing old:-) As far as diet, while they are not obligate coral eaters (which my first post didn't say they were) I have seen lots of them and they feed mostly on gorgonian polyps (dead mans fingers seem to be the most often fed on while I have observed them) and stony coral polyps with feather dusters and other inverts as minor parts of the diet. I have no scientific papers to prove the diet, but I have dove and collected fish all of my life and most years when the weather is good I dive at least 250 to 300 days a year.

I have kept them successfully in the past, but I had access to not only gorgonians but fresh oysters and scallops I would collect when diving and split open to add to the diet of my tanks. I have also tried and lost several under the same tank situation and diet options.
