Can Candy canes and Chalices touch?

i am going to pick up a small colony of candy canes and a small piece of hollywood stunner chalice and was wondering if these two could touch. i know they each have long sweeper tentacles but im not sure if they would hurt each other or not. im pretty sure it would be bad to let them touch but thats why i am asking here.

Do not allow them to touch. Do not even set them within a couple inches of each other. Each can put out sweepers several inches long and will gladly sting whatever is within range.

I recently lost most of a nice christmas favia and couldn't understand what was going on with it. Then I noticed it being spanked by a candy cane 3-4 inches away at night.

I wouldn't put them near each other. The chalices sweepers are pretty long and candy canes can put them out too. coral warfare never ends in anything good..

i got a LOT of coral today, thanks to CakemanPA, i got a couple mini colonies of palys, candy canes, and a hollywood stunner chalice frag, i also got some mushrooms and 2 small heads of frogspawn from a different person on CL. it is hard to give all of these things the space they need in a little 14 gallon Biocube, so i will need to be avidly fragging all of these corals. is there a "how to frag differnt LPS's" thread somewhere?

Candy canes were one of my first Lps's in my 14g biocube they grew very well under the stock lighting. very easy to frag too.

yea, the first frag of it i got from thisseemsfishy, John, and it was a day late getting here (PA) from kentucky in 50* weather(that was a high...), and it still made it. it is a great hardy coral. how do i frag them? just break them off their branch and glue to a plug/shell/rubble?

Yeah, just break them off or cut them with a bone cutter. Try not to cut through any tissue just the stoney skeleton. I use a two part bonding putty from Home Depot "Oatey's Fix-it Stick" and usually mount it to a piece of dry rock.

You can see how I did it to this Duncan . They have similar branching skeletons.

If you ever see any dry rock and dry rock rubble being sold it is good to have on hand for mounting coral and coral frags. I bought some frpm "bulk reef supply" once and once I bought a bag of fossilized reef rock from petsmart.

Here was a pic of my first mother colony now you can see I have them all over in both my tanks, of coarse this was over several years of keeping them.

As I mentioned before , I have never seen any long sweeper come from my CC at night i see the short feeder come out but they are no concern.

My hammers, frogspawn , Maze brain and bubble corals are another story but with some creative placement and using the water flow and rock barriers I make it work.

thats the longest i have seen my CC's tentacles get... weird... maybe thats all the longer they truly are. by the way if you dont mind me asking do you add any supplements into your tank for like calcium or alk?

Wow, that is a wild video! I think sweepers are more for combat over territory and not for feeding but I could be wrong. I hardly ever feed my corals unless I am trying to nurse them back to health .
I do not dose or add supplements to the my tanks I just try to keep up with the water changes to replenish needed elements. I try to keep my tanks pretty low tech.

You shouldn't have to worry right now about that . maybe when all your corals start filling out your tank you might consider dosing but for now your water changes should be sufficient, IMO.

Feeding your corals will definitely make them grow faster but if you do decide to feed them regulary keep an eye on your water quality.
