I have a 450g and want to do multiple Bicolor Dottyback's. Everything seems to say that only 1 of the same type is suitable, but will they do ok in a tank this size? Could I do 5+?
A 750 gal display at my LFS has 3 different dotty species (neon, indigo, and black&white) living together peacefully. They've been in there for years together and never harass each other. They even swim near each other all the time with no issues and never pick on other fish. IMO they aren't aggressive when given enough space so you should be fine.
There seems to be evidence from my observations that the tank raised are much less territorial. When these first strated showing up in the hobby I remember seeing numerous different species in LFS tanks toghether.
When I had wild caught years ago, just the sight of another psuedo species was a fight to the death.
My first pair of Frimandi were wild caught. They went into the tank and made a home under a rock and only came out along the back wall of the tank. One of my favorite pretty fish and I never got to see them.
Then I picked up 2 tank raised Frimandi. My tank has slab rock mounted on the back wall. Both new Frimandi found homes in the rock at the bottom of the tank.
So I have 4 vividly beautiful fish which are impossible to find in my tank.
My second springeri (wild) went in at 1/2 the size of the original. They follow each other through the rock work, but its not fighting. The second one is now just a slight bit smaller than the original, and I notice now they hide together under different rocks in the tank. The Springeri are always moving around. The Frimandi found homes and stick to them.
Over the years when I have had Frimandi in the past they used to open water swim much more than the ones I currently have.
