I was just wondering if Acans can eat or sting my pipefish, so can I have dragonface pipes w Acans?

I definitely think so. Dragonfaces are one of the hardiest pipes when it comes to LPS, and Acans are relatively safe even with seahorses. Go for it.

just looked in the tank, acan was munching on my flametail banded pipe. the acan caught it by the end of the tail. the pipe had been doing well. it looks like a quarter inch of it's tail has been striped off right above the tail fin. the pipe seems ok ,but i don't know for how long.

Wow... I wouldn't have foreseen that.

May we have a picture of the "Acan" for an ID conformation that it is in fact an Acanthastrea lordhowensis?

In my experience, acans are one of the most deadly corals in my tank. I had a 2 polyp frag fall only a huge favia and it brown jellied 1/3 of it. I had another acan fall on a ricordea. It was on there for maybe an hour and when I realized it and picked it up, half the blue ricordea was eaten. I dont know how it did it that quickly but I had just moved frags so I know it wasnt there more than an hour. It was barely touching a second polyp and that one AS WELL AS the first one brown jellied and were just gone within a day.

I would refrain from ANY LPS in a seahorse tank because those feeder tenticles must really pack a punch and seahorses and pipes have a pretty low tolerance to stings. If one rested near it or hitched near one, I dont think it would end well as with block head's situation.

Oh if someone has a research article on acanthastrea's nematocyst stinging cells I would love to read it. In my experience though, all the LPS tentacles pack a punch.

I've had my pipes with a Turbinaria for almost 2 years. not an issue at all!

and look dawgdoodoo, I see enough of those sorry dogs in the ATL, if your on reefcentral, pick something at least more intelligent. I mean, a college that can at least S-P-E-L-L D-O-G!
LOL!

i'll try to post a couple pics later, the pipe didn't make it. acan will close on anything that comes into contact with it. the pipes tail looked like it the scales were melted off. my guess, it 's tail rested on the acan and the acan latched on. the pipe was struggling to get free when i found it. i freed the pipe from the acan and it seemed fine other than the tail being cooked. it was swiming and eating for about a hour or so. it ended up not being able swim and got stuck on the overflow grate

Hmmm... even when clicked on, that is a very small picture; But I'll take your word for it that it is an Acanthastrea, not another mussid coral.

I'm sorry for your loss.:(

Acans can extrude their mesenterial filaments a suprisingly long way and all those gastric juices can pummel other corals.
