Can I just get a good lens for this camera?

I have a Cannon powershot G7, outdated I know but not all that bad. My question is can I just get a good macro lens for this camera and be able to take decent pics? If so can someone point me to a good one that is compatible?

Short answer.... No you can't get a "good" macro lens to fit a G7. The G series cameras are really meant to be used with its built in lens. There are some lenses that fit over the built in lens, but they degrade image quality.

This does not mean you couldn't take good photos with what you already have. I suggest putting the camera in manual mode. If your familiar with the basics of photography I'm sure you could get what your after.

If what your after is super macro shots, then a DSLR might be what your after. Keep in mind, to get the results you are expecting with a DSLR, you will need knowledge to get what you want.

If you're serious about getting into this type of photography, but don't have a big budget, look at used equipment. I still get a lot of use out of my Canon 40D that I bought used about 3 years ago. For that matter, I look back at pictures I took with my 5MP, 1st generation Digital Rebel, and I'm still quite happy with those. A good lens, especially a macro lens isn't going to come cheap, but you certainly don't have to get the latest and greatest camera to take quality pictures.
