Hello all!

new to the community, been looking for a place to get some info about marine/saltwater crabs, at any rate, i got this guy from the LFS for free because im friends with one of the workers, she had this crab in her tank for a while but was unsure of what kinda crab he is....I've asked around and no one seems to know, I would just love to know, he's the only inhabitant of my tank that I am not sure what kind of species he is, thanks again!

here's a pretty good youtube of him

any help is appreciated.. something interesting i noticed yesterday, he was burying himself in the sand so i figured maybe he was going to molt, i checked in on him later this evening and he had unburied himself but there was 1 leg laying on the ground that kind of looked like just the skin, i watched him for a little bit and sure enough he still had the 4 legs (2 on each side) and his big claw and little claw so I dont think he like lost a leg so I'm assuming it was just the skin/exoskeleton, perhaps there's more of his skin/body deeper in the sand and i just cant see it. at any rate he seems to be good,.. he's out scavenging around atm (4am)

another site said he's a strawberry crab, i dont see how on each that's even possible, he looks nothing of the sort

Notice the green eyes on red & white eyestalks? That's pretty typical of hermit crab species in the genus Dardanus. Seems odd to find just one leg - usually the molted exoskeleton is intact.

Some Dardanus species are among the largest hermit crabs and they can be very destructive. The crab in the video was doing a great job of cleaning the sand bed. Hopefully yours is one of the small species and will continue to be a harmless detritus feeder.
