Can test strips be used?

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive test strip or test kit?

Salifert is most the used selection.
Not the cheapest but reliable.

You need a test kit that returns numbers with decimal places. Salifert is the best.

If it is a still cycling new tank, you an get away with ammonia test strips just to tell you that the cycle isn’t finished yet. Even then I’d still suggest an actual test kit if for no other reason than to get practice using them.


I’ve used Salifert exclusively for over 30 years. They are reasonably priced, fairly easy to use, and most people importantly, give very repeatable results.
