Setting up a filter/frag room in my basement wondering if we can get some pics of just separate room dedicated for sump ext. Please no FTS shots. Also if you can spare a second please just give use a quick description on display tank size and maybe changes you think you should have made or your favorite part to the setup to make everything . Thanks Guys and Gals

I'll play. Maybe I will get some feedback too.

This is my "walkaround" sump. It is the least space efficient design I could come up with. The pay off is that everything is at waist to chest level for super easy chores. Obviously, my wife NEVER comes down here. The whole unfinished 90 year old section of our basement is MINE. With an iPOD station, secret wine cellar for the really good stuff, I actually love to tinker down here. Anyway...

I have a deep sand bed refugium, an LPS growout section, a live rock semi cryptic zone, a mixing area with filter socks all in my sump. Acros won't survive down here, but, Acan frags seem to love the frag area. Plenty to eat!

Next to the sump I have a dump tank (65 gallon rubbermaid) plumbed directly into the sewer for water changes. Another one is filled with RO water to refill the dump tank. Add salt, turn on mixing pump, slowly introduce new SW into system. I really like this.

The skimmer and calcium reactor sit next to the sump table on a metroshelf, with skimmate bucket and clean/dirty filter sock storage area here.

The whole thing is driven by a reeflo marlin and a little giant to feed the skimmer.

There is a UV filter on the back wall that I can take off line easily to clean sleeves, change bulbs, etc...

If you want more details... I will post the diagrams that explain it better.

The only thing I would do differently would be to properly set up a gravity feed for my skimmer next time. Maybe, a separate growout area for SPS frags. And, when I get around to it I will clean up all those wires!

Over the sump is a Vornado Fan controlled by my Aquacontroller for first line cooling. Next there is a drop in chiller. I made a plenum over this and when it turns on, an inline fan exhausts the hot air from the chiller. This also vents the humid air out of the basement. A second 4 inch dryer duct is venting the hood space from my tank on the floor above.

Under the chiller is space for a QT. I just have a 20 gallon here now. I can fill this with "dumpwater" from the main tank by a permanent siphon that I open and close with a little john guest valve.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ow5znfI1YSgiHofjxuT6GA?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKSq7_l6tux0gE&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_FlZh_JfubzQ/SrKdjzQONII/AAAAAAAAAD8/n-p03fm0Pdk/s800/IMG_3530.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rmanecke/20090917?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKSq7_l6tux0gE&feat=embedwebsite">2009 09 17</a></td></tr></table>

I have a nice little workstation to do fragwork and testing.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ktjCSXlMpJC1LanCdkkVaA?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKSq7_l6tux0gE&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_FlZh_JfubzQ/SrKdkDMRzUI/AAAAAAAAAEA/ZKtmvjb-0iA/s800/IMG_3531.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rmanecke/20090917?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKSq7_l6tux0gE&feat=embedwebsite">2009 09 17</a></td></tr></table>

The big duct vents the chiller when it is on, and the basement. The smaller one comes from upstairs and vents the headspace above the tank. I have a large dehumidifier that kicks on as backup. My basement is old and drafty... so it is basically like a garage and I practically vent it with outside air. More elegant temp and humidity control would be needed for a nicer, more modern, type of space.

Here's mine from years back. Still the best setup on any of the tanks I set up.

Here are the doors in the basement under the tank on the first floor of the house.

And the room itself.

I'm currently working on one now. The room is about 11' x 15', and is directly below the DT.

Sump area.

Two right pipes are from the overflow, and the one on the left is the output from the skimmer.

The must have utility sink, and RO/DI unit. The four posts to support the DT from falling through the floor. The duct to the right is going to an HRV to hopefully control the humidity in the equipment room.

A couple of 175 gallon storage tanks for top off and water changes. I currently have these on the other side of the sump wall. This will be the next project.

Nanook,

What type of skimmer are you running there? It looks huge!!! Is it a DIY model?

Marc

Custom GEO beckett fed and needlewheel recirculating model. 18" diameter by 60"+ tall....amazing:)

Nanook...

Do you have his contact info, I tried searching for the website with no luck.

The "fish room"

The "fish room"

Not as pretty as many, but functional:

This is the back of the 350G through the wall tank, which projects about 28" into the equipment room. Four overflows feed the (2) sumps and skimmer:

Can we get some more pics of your systems. Im almost with my set up and getting a little nervous that i should have just kept it in the stand. Maybe add some of your pros and cons.

It is about maintenance. Design everything so that you can easily access it, clean it, take it apart, remove it, etc. The fish room just makes everything easier.

Here's my fish room. It is actually very well organized... Sorry you can't read the labels on the image...
