Hi my name is Kristian and i am in 3rd grade Mr.Rutherfords class in garden hills elementary we have 5 fish tanks. a reef tank,a refugeum [i think that's how you spell it ],a frag tank, and a coral properation tank ,a corenteen tank.O.k. to the question are you able to breed a black and white clown fish with a normal one. Thanks for reading my post or question and again thanks .

Kristian-

Yes, this is possible. The outcome depends a little on what species of orange clownfish you have (ocellaris or percula), the black and white is ocellaris. The coloration of the offspring are called "Mocha", and as the name suggests the coloration is a brownish/orange. If your orange-and-white fish is an ocellaris, you have a pure species, if your orange-and-white is percula, you will have a hybrid (cross between two species).

I think it's great your class is participating in this so well, and what a cool teacher you must have!
Keeping the clowns is not all that difficult, breeding can be challenging.
While most of your questions can be easily answered here, for the more challenging breeding questions I would refer to Joyce Wilkerson's book on clownfish care and breeding, perhaps your teacher already knows of this.
Good luck!
Oh and it's spelled "refugium", coming from the word refuge, an area lacking of predation for the purpose of providing a safe area for animals like copepods, amphipods to reproduce.

Check out this article on "black photons".

Sanjay Joshi is an acquaintance of mine (we are both part of a club in PA) and I believe he was one of the first (if not the first) to start breeding clownfish of a cross species. Since that time there has been a whole explosion of people miss-matching clowns and producing "designer" clownfish. I owned a pair of Sanjay's 3rd batch (the 2nd surviving batch) but sadly lost one so I still have the one, but she's now paired up with a regular occelaris (what you'd call normal). I have never gotten eggs out of them although I've heard some people HAVE gotten eggs. I don't know if anybody has actually hatched any though...one issue with mixing species like that is the children are generally unable to reproduce.
