DO NOT get the 70-300 non-VR unless you're strictly going to use it on a tripod.

I disagree with this statement unless you have very shaky hands. This lens is in my wife's bag and she and I have used it hand-held, braced, and on a tripod and have achieved excellent results all the way around. If you can swing the money for the VR version then by all means go that route, but the 70-300 non-VR is a fine lens (a little slow albeit) if you've got a tight budget and want the reach.

Just a thought, but you might want to consider picking up an extra battery for you camera. Never fails when you have an important one time shot to take, the battery is dead.... Harold's carries a generic version considerably less money than the Nikon battery.

just picked up a d40 with 55-200 and 18-55 lens. I traded some reef equipment for it and couldn't be happier with it right now.

Tagging along to see what you decided.

xtm - Thanks I like the sound of that...Nikonian :D Now I need to read and reread lessons here

tyoberg - Why you like the 40 best? Seems like the 60 should be better but guess not?

Well glad I made the right choice!

New and better aren't necessarily the same.

The flash synch on the D40 is 1/500sec. And it's probably the cheapest meaning you can spend more $$ where it matters (speedlight and glass).
