More specifically...
To answer your question:
We could maintain zoanthids in tanks without skimmer for a long time, yes.
And you shouldn't need water changes every single day either.
We could keep fishes, corals, jellyfishes, whales without skimmers...
The system wouldn't be as good as if it had a good skimmer running 24/7.
Again, water changes will never substitute skimmers.
To tell the truth I personally believe there is nothing you can do that would substitute a good skimmer.
