Cancun or riviera maya scuba diving

How is scuba diving in Cancun or Riviera Maya? My family and I just got certified and were looking to take a trip someplace in the caribbean or Mexico. We were looking into Cozumel, but it was a little pricey for us (there's 6 of us). If those two aren't good, does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks!

The snorkeling near Cancun/Riviera is excellent, diving is supposed to be better at Cozumel where there are more dropoffs and walls.

It's easy to stay in Cancun or the Rivera and hop the ferry to Cozumel.
