Canister filter media question

So I have a 60g tank setup with magniflow canister since November. I have followed the directions of changing the media every 4 weeks. My question is should I be changing the carbon bags every four weeks or should I wait longer. I have two clowns and 1 swallowtail angel.

Four weeks seems about right.. It's kind of hard to tell when the GAC is exhausted, but if you stick with a routine you should be ok IMO. If you want though you can always go another week and see how the tank responds.

Buy the carbon media in bulk and change just the media inside the filter. Use the water you'd discard on your water changes to wash the new carbon or RO/DI water. Don't wash on tap water.

You can find activated carbon in bulk at amazon.

( just wondering why tap water isn't good to rinse carbon? )

Hi!

There's a few posts on that...

Also there's many variables to consider. For example tank's size or tap water's purity.

I'll not go further in this discussion, but I'd rather be cautious when introducing tap water in the tank to avoid a potential contamination.

This doesn't hurt and as I drain my tank's water on my water change routine, I fill up a bucket and do the rinse twice.

This I do once a month only, when changing the media.

As we see in the link above, there's many people who rinses in tap water with no problem. Just a matter of preference and knowing what you're doing.

For me, I started with my water changes and top off with tap water - even before I had my skimmer, then adding the tap water conditioner. But then after introducing the skimmer, I had to stop becuase the bubbles and then I bought an RO/DI unit. But this was a "maturing process" on the hobbie's knowledge, which I'm still learning!! :)

I agree that changing it out about monthly should be just fine. I, however, have never bothered rinsing any media in anything other than tap water. The minuscule amount of water left over after rinsing has never bothered anything in any of my tanks. If you wanted to give it a final dip in old tank water (or ro/di) that couldn't hurt, I just never saw a point to the extra step.

I buy my carbon from www.bulkreefsupply.com in 5g buckets.
