Canister filter

I've got a canister filter system. It says you can use petroleum jelly (vasoline) on the rubber seals to keep them from drying out. But every now and then I find little balls of vasoline floating in my tank. Is this normal and could it be bad for my tank?

My guess is your using to much vasoline. I recommend wiping the seals after applying the lube using a clean lint free cloth until there is only a shine remaining. The seal is not a moving part thus the lube is there to keep it from bonding to the surfaces it is sealing.

plumbers silicone grease is a much better choice, and as mentioned above, use just enough to leave the o-ring shiny - no globs of leftover lube.

I would not use vasoline due to it's being petroleum jelly - unless of course, you are doing a Exon Valdez biotope!:eek1:
