Canister filter?

I have a sucessful 180 gal reef tank and I have experience with what works for filtration.

I am starting a seahorse tank and I have aquired a 46 gal bowfront aqarium and it has a new Fluval 404 canister filter.

My question is has anyone ever used a canister filter for a seahorse tank? Can I use it in any way with my new tank?

I am perpaired to filter the way I have with my reef tank but I wanted to see if anybody uses one of these for a filter.

Thanks for your replies.

I use my fluval strictly for putting carbon in for water polishing and dissolved organic removal.
Problem with long term use is that the build up of detritus in the filter needs to be continually cleaned or it results in decomposing matter adding to the nuisance nutrients that breed algae and subsequent bacterial problems.
I have 15 yrs of reefing experience and had to learn so much more now that I keep seahorses.
My seahorse tanks are vacuumed before every feeding to cut down on the decomposition potential for their tanks. (leads to things like tail rot for instance)
For my biological filter I use sterilized previous live rock that is recultured for the bacteria. Cuts down on inadvertently introducing harmful things to the livestock. And to make the vac. easier, I go bare bottom.
While all my reef tanks run 80° to 84°, I try to keep my seahorse tanks under 72°.
