Canister Filters

I've been using a siphon tube draining into a filter sock for cleaning detritus out of my tank and am looking for a more efficient solution. My question is whether or not a canister filter would provide enough suction for this and if so which is the best one at a reasonable price?

I've seen people do that on freshwater tanks, so it should work on saltwater. I don't use canister filters, though, so I can't give any recommendations.
