Cannot take good pictures! Canon sx10 IS

I have a canon power shot sx10 is. I have read many articles on this site, and others, and cannot take good quality pictures. I've played with this thing for hours, trying different modes and settings. I don't know what I am doing wrong! I don't think its the camera. Anybody have one of these, or just can guide me in the right direction?

Thanks, I'll have to play around with it some more when I get time. I couldnt take anything close to what you did with out the lens. Is the s5is a better camera?
