Canon lens question

Which lens would be the best walk around lens to buy with the Canon 5d? I shoot mainly family pics and my kids outside ..also planning to go to Disney and don't want to carry alot just the camera with the lens attached .
So what are your recommendations?

Depending on what other lenses you have, I'd go with something simple like a 50mm. I have the f/1.4 version and it's my everyday use it for everything lens. It does great for outdoors and pictures of the kid. Amazing sharpness in a $400 lens.

I'm not sure if it would be as good at Disneyworld as you'll probably want to be zooming in and out a lot, but it will still take good pictures there. And if you want something light and easy to carry around for hours, it doesnt get much lighter than a 50mm.

ok the 24-105 comes with the 5d kit and I want to add another lens I have the 28-135 that came with the 7d and I have the tamaron macro 90mm I was thinking of getting the 100mm L series macro for the corals shots ..Now what is the 24-70 mainly used for portrait type shots?

The 24-70 is used for the same type of shots as the 24-105, it just has a bigger aperture and therefore lets you shoot moving or active subjects in lower light.

As far as image quality goes, I've owned the 24-70 for about a year and used the 24-105 and they seem pretty identical with maybe a slight edge towards the 24-70, although I much prefer the 24-70 due to the f/2.8.

It's a great walk around lens, but heavy. I owned one during a vacation I took to Hawaii and sold the lens a while after that (and bought the 50mm f/1.4) but for my last trip to Hawaii I rented one for the three weeks to have, it's a really good lens for just all around photography when you dont want to be switching lenses in and out.

I have and use the 24-105 as my walkaround lens. I also have a F2.8 70-200, same in an F4. With the new ISO qualities unless you are in very low light or will be using a tele converter I think the speed gain is not worth the extra weight. That's just my opinion of course. Honestly if I am just using something for a walk around situation I take my P&S S90 or if I want to deal with the DSLR, the 24-105. I also have the 50mm (F1.4 nd F1.8) and find they are both great lenses but I rarely use them. My only qualm with the 24-105is the lack of zoom...of course the 24-70 would be even worse in that regard. Might be worthe getting the cheep 50mm too for portraits as the wide aperature makes for nice backgrounds when it comes to portraits.

Recty - dual flashes for the new Avatar? Light box?

If you have a Tamron 90mm Macro then why do you want to spend almost $500 on a Canon 100mm?

The Canon 24-105 is your best bet, or a 28-135 Canon Lens.

No light box needed :) I use a inside compact flourescent "warm" light for the one side then natural light coming in from the double glass doors leading to the deck. That provides the more bluish tint coming in from that side.

I've taken quite a few pictures there, they turn out really nice for baby photography and I dont even need to set up any special lighting which is perfect because I can just spontaneously shoot, I just need to position myself between Nicole and the deck :)

The question was what else besides a 24-105, not many options to be fair. I am with you on the 28-135 being a sub par lens but as all rounders go its got a good zoom ratio but would be my last, absolute last resort.

I'd be contemplating the fast 50mm prime (good low light, low weight, prime) and the 24-70 (some zoom, little wider angle at one end, requires more light, heavier).

Anyone like to buy me either of those? I promise to use it and report back how I like it!

I own the 28-135 and agree it is really not a very good lens when it comes to overall image quality. For me, I would not want to be limited to a fixed focal length. A 50 or 35mm might be good unless you were in a tight area or wanted to get something across the way. If I were carrying it around all day I would be looking at an F4 lens VS an F2.8.

I kinda like the 28-135 for all around shots it came with the Canon 7d the 24-105 is nice I have been using it all day .
The lens that has caught my attention is the 85mm f1.2L II
