Canon Lens Rebates Announced

You guys have a similar lens lineup as i do. I have both the 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8 IS and also the 100 macro. Also have the 17-40 and a couple other lenses but what you choose to have next is all dependent on your shooting style. I only use a flash as a last resort as my style i'm finding (especially with the 5D) is to crank up the ISO and use available light. I've used all these lenses on both my 20D and my 5D2 and they have their upsides and downsides when used on a crop body. On the 5D everything just fell into place perfectly. I was in the same dilemma as you. Get the 10-22 or get the 17-40? I am glad i got the 17-40 because once i got the FF body, the 17-40 was just stunning on it. Using a flash properly is not easily done. There is a steep learning curve and it takes alot of practice to use a flash and have your pictures come out like you didn't use a flash. (if you follow me). Have you considered buying a fast prime? Maybe even the 50/1.8?

MrSandman,
I eventually want to get to a FF and that is part of the issue I have with the 10-22. SO far the Rebel XSi is fine for right now. When I purchased my 100mm macro I also placed and order for the 50 f1.4 but a back order issue made me cancel the order for the 50f 1.4 I still plan on getting it :). Everything with DSLR has a learning curve which is the pain in the butt...lol. Between learning aperture, f stops, exposure and ISO I have enough to keep me busy...lol. One good thing is Canon lenses keep their value from what I have seen. I may just sell some more frags and get them both...lol.

Do you have to buy them from a particular vendor?

I'm curious about this as well

The rebates are instant and should be reflected in the listed price. Most of the larger reputable vendors (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) have a note right on the product page that says something like 'rebate details', then mentions that the rebate is included in the price.

Some of them even go up in value, for example 35/1.4 and 200/1.8, since they are either not in production or constantly on back order. I'm trying to convince my wife that lenses are a better investment than the stock market :)

Unfortunately there is also the chance that the retail price can go up randomly. There is a big stink on some Canon forums about Adorama and B&H raising their prices significantly on lenses once the rebates were announced. I ordered my 70-200 2.8 IS and got it for $1499 after rebate. It is now $1599 after rebate from the same place and it's only been about 4 days.

Yeah - it depends on where the price started. B&H and Adorama normally sell below list price so there is some wiggle room.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. B&H seems to have some wild price fluctuation from time to time (up and down over the course of a few days). Anyone shopping for a lens should know the going price, as long as you know that spotting a deal shouldn't be too difficult.

Jacob D,
That's good to know they can increase in value as well lol. Like you said it's all about knowing a deal when you see it. The price shift makes me want to stray away from them for my next purchase but their prices are always lower than most places to start with so I guess like beerguy says they have a little wiggle room.

dendronepthya,
It's kinda shady how they increased the prices. Adorama actually increased last week before the announcement...lol. I had been checking the prices everyday to see if it was going to happen. They are basically making the rebate only $100. I ordered mine the day I started this post and BH had not increased yet but when I just checked like you said they have gone up in price.

beerguy,
I would prefer they wiggle well in advance of the rebates so it just does not look so obvious. When Adorama raised their prices I knew it was only a matter of time before the rebates were coming out. Apparently they did the same thing last year as well :( and it was on a few of the photography forums :(.

Now I wait till 7:30 when I can go to UPS to pick up the new toys :).

OK so I picked up my boxes and wow these things are heavy :). You can tell the difference in the kit lens and these for sure. The weight alone will make you think you have a real lens and not a toy. Now that these are in its off to rearrange the gear bag :). If nothing else I am going to look like a semi pro when shooting even if the pictures turn out like crap until I get the hang of it.
