Canon Rebel XTi

My wife just bought me a Canon Rebel XTi, and they are on sale at BestBuy for $784.00 vs. the normal price of $899.00. Probably could have got it cheaper on E-Bay, but it is local so if there are any issues we can return it.
I just have the standard lense that comes with it right now, will look at macro lenses next.
If anyone out there just bought an XTi in the last thirty days from Best Buy or Circuit City go get the sale price difference from them. Thats $115.00 bucks!!!

I know its in the internet, especially when you add it to your basket, but come to think about it the tag at the store display case also shows it being $784.00.

Maybe you can buy another batery with the money you get back, either way its better off in your pocket than theirs. I thought Circuit City used to match like 115% of the difference (at least a few years ago they did).

Can anyone suggest which macro lense is better? What size? I probably didn't word that right, but I am sure you get the newbie questions all of the time. Also costs needs to stay as low as possible and still get a good piece of glass.

This depends on who you talk to...I've read good reviews from folks that recommend Sigma 105mm, Tamron 90mm and Canon 100mm.

I ended up getting the Canon EF 100 mm f 2.8 Macro USM Lens ($458.23 plus tax - $60 rebate) with a Canon camera to get double rebate on the lens and camera a couple of days ago from delldotcom.

Most people will tell you the best way is go to the store with your own memory card and test out each lens and draw your own conclusion.

The price for the Sigma & Tamron is $320 and the Canon is $450 at bwayphotodotcom.

I'm pretty sure both the Tamron and Sigma are not internally focusing lenses-- so the lens barrel extends outward as you focus. The Canon does not get longer as you focus closer- that makes it the best choice I think. The longer barrel makes it harder to use a flash for close-up work, and it makes it harder to hold steady at slower shutter speeds. In terms of optical quality I would guess that all three lenses are going to be pretty similar. I wouldn't hesitate to get a Sigma lens becuase they're making some excellent products nowadays but this one feature is very important in my opinion.

Thanks for the advise on the lenses. I am pretty excited to finally get one of these cameras. I also realize that I still have to do my part on learning how to take a good picture that the camera won't do it all.

Yep- that's especially true with close-up photography because depth of field shrinks as magnification increases... add water, moving fish, a layer of aquarium glass and you got a tough situation :p

First Shots with XTi

First Shots with XTi

Here are my first shots with the new camera. Keep in mind I just had rotator cuff surgery and have a hard time getting my arm up to take photo. I will start using the tripod next. Some may be a little blurry. Here we go:

This is the standard lense that comes with the cmaera shot in macro mode, I had not figured out how to turn the flash off in macro yet. I will have to read the manual some more.

That is, in fact, a rockin' lens. I recommend it highly!

Those are very nice pictures with the kit lens and once you start using the tripod you wouldn't want to go back. Keep those pictures coming. :)

Hi all,

I may be pruchasing a Rebel Xti with a macro lens. But after reading this thread I'm not 100% sure if the Canon EF 100 mm f 2.8 Macro USM Lens will fit the Xti due to the lense mounting type. The 100 mm is EF type and there is a 60 mm that is EF-S type. Please help me out...

XTi accepts EF and EF-S lenses.

EF-S lenses are specially designed for cameras with 1.6x sensors (i.e. the 20D, 30D, Rebel , XT and XTi). EF lenses work on all EOS cameras.

Thanks for the fast reply Beerguy!

So which one should I get for the Rebel Xti? Will there be any difference with the 100 mm EF versus the 60 mm EF-S in performance?

FYI you cant turn the flash off in macro mode ...

I'm guessing that's bad with tank shots since it will cause glass glare...so whats the alternative?
