Canon Rebel XTi

Took me a while... had to go download the manual and find the right section. According to the manual the flash will turn itself on if it's a low light situation. You may be able to work around it by setting a higher iso, bigger aperture or faster shutter speed, but since I haven't used the camera I don't know at what point the camera thinks it's low light. Regardless, the camera has aperture priority so it's a non-issue really.

You're welcome. A word of warning though- the tank lights seem really bright but actually they really aren't enough for seriously close macro work *handheld*. Depth of field (the area in the picture that appears in sharp focus) shrinks as you increase magnification, so when you're really close to the subject you need to use very small apertures to get decent depth of field, and that means longish shutter speeds, even with bright metal halides. You'll end up using a tripod or settling for narrow depth of field. This article explains this stuff in detail, with photo examples.

i have the xti and ocaisionally the flash will go off out of nowhere in macro but if you get the camera close to the tank it is much better

I agree with IBASSFSH, that's quite the order! Congrats on the new camera equipment. Now all that's required is, like you said, some reading up on the equipment and photography, but more importantly, practice!
