Canopies

Are canopies still being used these days? Seems to me like more people like the rimless modern look with hanging lights.

I just switched from this:

To this:

It was a 'forced change as the 180g tank developed a 30gph leak. But I love the modern look of the new system.

I went with a canopy. Personal preference really, I like the cleaner look and having everything contained with wires hidden.

I really like those stands, were the custom made or are they prefab? Where did you get them if you don't mind?

Thanks, I really like them too. BTW, they match our kitchen cabinets perfectly!

The DT stand (along with the125g tank, 50g sump, skimmer and DC controllable return pump) all came from CADlight. Delivered it was about $8-900 less than a Red Sea of the same size (with no skimmer or return pump).

The display Refugium stand is a kitchen under sink cabinet which I reinforced and added the top. There is info on how I did it in my tank build thread. There's a link in my signature below.

I have canopys on both of my tanks but I like a lot of canopyless tanks also. I think it depends on the tank itself. A rimless tank with a sleek led setup really do look nice without a canopy.

I definitely use a canopy. My wife gets migraines and looking directly at the side of a bright light would cause them.

I don't get migraines, but I am a photographer and I know that brightness draws your eye, and so the bright spot above the aquarium distracts from it. Also I sit really close to my tank and look into it, and I don't want to glance up straight into a light and get those spots in my eyes.

Have a custom Ten-ecor 300g tank that came with a canopy, fans, lights. Top is covered with the exception of two large removable acrylic covers.

Took it all off as it became a major pain when it was time to get into the tank for maintenance purposes. Much better ambient light into the tank as well.

I will be installing hanging light fixtures above the tank.

This is just me but I personally hate seeing the water line a Rimless tank gives.

I also think fancy lights being visible takes some of the centerpoint of the eye away from the main attraction that is the reef.

I love canopy tanks over rimless and how it makes it look like your looking into actual reef system and not into a giant bowl of water.

I've had canopies on my 90 gallon. I was using MH and VHO at the time and heat was a major issue. The fans on the canopy helped some, but in the summer I had to blast the AC to keep the tank temp in check. I switched to T5 and temp was as bad, but still had to be closely monitored. Now I have removed the canopy and replace the t5s with leds, temp is much easier to manage. On my next build I think I might try one of those floating canopies..
