Cant Keep Reef Clean

So, don't try to say I am the only one being completely anecdotal.

What I was saying was, you are telling him he would be wasting salt and it would be useless to do a water change with distilled based on the 1% of examples out there. I am saying that if 99% of the time one method is better then the other, and if those are his only two choices at the moment, then he should try the one that has the higher chance of producing better results.

"It takes me an hour to get to work on my bike. Im starting to be late and its causing problems. I can take the bus and it will get me there in 25 minutes. A car would get me there in 10, but I can't get one right now. Should I take the bus to work for the next week?"

Your answer is, "It's not worth it, it would be a waste, just ride the bike and keep being late"

I'm sorry, but that is a terrible example for this situation. Here's a better one:

"I haven't changed my oil in 6 months and can't afford an oil change. I have some oil from my neighbor that was used for 5 months. Should I use it?"

Obviously, not. If you read in my previous posts, I also suggested he could check with an LFS for RODI water. So, should he just get distilled or maybe see about some RODI water from an LFS?

Well, my closest LFS that sells RO is over an hour away. So if he is that type of a situation then it's not really an option.

And there ya go, basing it on your own problem\example. And unfortunately yes, we can only go on those examples sometimes. But anyway, this thread has gone past the solution. The OP has already said he will look into RODI filters.

Okay do I have to separate you 2???

I'm a rookie but I can offer this...I got a portable RO/DI unit on Amazon for 120.00 dollars. It works great. I thinks its the "Mirko Omega" all the lines are color coded and I'm real happy with it. So are my fish. Also, check out Clear FX Pro filter media, It looks like its very similar to GFO, and it has carbon. I bought some and will be trying it out this week.

Good luck.....

Not to start an RO vs. distilled water debate, but here is an example. I was buying RO from my LFS and I was having all kinds of algae problems. I bought a TDS meter and checked it. Guess what? TDS was 43! I started using distilled and it tested 0. Big difference IMO.

LFS makes very little money from selling RODI water. If you can't live with the TDS that comes with it, then you better make the water yourself. With that said, I don't think it will make much difference if you keep up with your tank maintenance and using GFO.
