Captive breed maroon pairing question

Lightning was sold & the mis-bar was moved into another tank to spend its days in the company of a BTA and a hammer colony... :rolleye1:

Putting the lightning up for sale. Believe it or not I like the other one better... Call me crazy.

I honestly don't think they will successfully pair. They fight through the box all day long and I believe at this point they would fight until one or both are dead.

too much of a newbie to weigh in on what to do, but don't feel bad for liking misbar better. I like it better too lol

My buddy took in a large female white stripe maroon on trade and gave her to me.

Said it should go a lot smoother given the huge size differences.

Well, I put the small mis-bar in the breeder box and added the large female to the main display.

Th female would twitch/jerk, not the shimmy shake; more of a pop. She never rushed the box and seemed rather calm.

After a week, I released the little guy. He went straight into hiding. The female slowly went in to check things out.

The little guy started shimmy shaking like crazy. So far I have seen no real aggression.

It seems like the female just heads over his way to make him shake then cruises on by.

This time around I'm amazed how different it's going. It's weird seeing this large female just slowly swagger around the tank.

Obviously she doesn't feel threatened.

Took her 3 days to eat. Wouldn't take pellets or mysis, just spit them out; but would eat krill.

Today she ate a pellet, so that's good. I'll keep this updated as it can go an any direction...

So far so good... No fighting. The little one seems to follow the big one around at a distance.

Sometimes he will approach her and she will go in as to say "I'm the boss".

He will then shake and swim next to her brushing her cheek then swim off and hang out at the other end of the tank.

Update: They are paired and host a giant hairy mushroom. They large female is very easy going, the little guy nips the heck outa my hand or anything else that goes in the tank for that matter...

When I separate two clowns trying to pair them, I always leave the "female" to run the tank and put the smaller one in the cage. That way the larger one know that she is the body and the little one know that he better not trying to fight.
I think you, and whoever advise you to cage the female was wrong. This may prolong the fighting by repress the female and encourage the male to continue to fight. That was why te smaller one charge and trying to fight the larger female in the cage.
Hope it work out better this time.

Yeah, everything I've read always had the smaller (male) in the breeder box.

I tried everything, so I figured I'd give that suggestion a try.

I think they where just too close to the same size to be honest.

When I got the large female, I put the smaller one in the box and let the female claim the tank.

Worked out well in the end.
