Caravan's 180g In-Wall - Texas

I am new to RC, but have been around the hobby about 4 years, sticking mostly to my local reef clubs website of DFWMAS. Over the course of the 4 years, I have gone as small as 3 gallons and as large as 120 gallons, but have finally gotten wife approval for a large In-Wall setup to replace my current Nuvo 24g.

Tank will be built between my office and dining room. I won't physically attach the tank to the wall, but the stand has a 4" overhang that will rest on the 12" header I had my builder put in at 40" high in the wall. Dining room side will only be a picture frame around the tank, while the office side will have cabinetry with removable faces (magnets)

Main Details:
Tank and Sump have been built by Concept Aquariums out of Canada. Surprisingly, even after shipping, they had the best pricing and everyone I have read that has a tank from them raves about their quality.
Tank: 60x30x25, starphire front and back panes, 3" eurobracing, external overflow on the 30" side
Sump: 48x22x16, 4 chambers (Sump, Fuge, Frags, Return)
Stand is a 1.5" square steel frame built by a local DFWMAS member

Other Equipment:
Lighting is DIY LED, using CNCreef heatsinks, meanwell drivers, and 6 Cree Lumia 5.2 arrays controlled by a Storm-X controller
2 MP40's for flow, Jebao wp-10 for frag section in sump
2 Jebao DC6000 return pumps, both T'd off for reactors and a water change outlet
SR Octopus Elite int-200 skimmer
dual BRS reactors for carbon/gfo as needed
Bubble Magus doser and BRS 2-part
Apex controller with dual EB8's, breakout box, and auto-feeder
BRS Pukani (70 lbs) & Fiji (25 lbs) dry rock, will be lightly aquascaped since it goes between the wall

I have begun constructing the framing for the cabinetry, and added some cabinet lighting on a switch on the american DJ panel. The entire cabinet frame has been coated in a generous coating of Kilz primer, and the side of the cabinetry that faces the tank will see that treatment as well. I have covered the drywall inside the cabinetry with a plastic sheeting to protect it from splashes. I have also added venting to the top of the cabinetry with 4 120mm fans to push/pull air.

The display lights have been built using CNCreef Asis 418 heatsinks with 2 Lumia 5.2 arrays each. Meanwell LDD drivers are providing the power, and everything is wired with Cat5e cabling and running great. Chris at CNCreef is now designing a puck-style heatsink that I will be prototyping for another Lumia array over my frag tank.

Some of the plumbing that I can manage without the tank/sump here has been done, as well as some of the wiring for the Apex controlled items. At this point though, I am really waiting on the tank and sump to arrive next week :D

Some pics to hold you over for now

And a quick pic of my current Nuvo 24g that has been running about 6 months:

I should be updating this page relatively often, especially since I am working on it a bit every day.

Valid Question :)

The wife said no more than 100 gallons...so naturally I doubled that when we had the house built and I asked the builder to put in a 64" wide and 36" tall opening with proper headers. 5 foot wide was the max I could go without tearing the wall back down and making the opening wider.

Found either the newly married guy or the oldest married guy.

You should have gone for a 100 gallon sump. With the appropriate sized tank obviously! ;)

nah, Happily Married for 8 years with 2 young kids...she just doesn't really know how big 100 gallons is verses 300 gallons, so she didn't want it to be massive. I like the dimensions overall, as I wanted it to be wider than 24" front to back this time, and a 60" viewing side is perfect for our house. Gave me plenty of storage room on either side of the tank in the office, and a good centerpiece on the wall in the dining room.

Picked up 3 MP40's and a WXM module today from a local reef club member. soaking the wet sides in a vinegar bath right now, and then will start wiring everything up.

The tank got stuck in customs for a few days, so it looks like I may not get it before I leave for vacation next Wednesday, so it will probably be monday the 16th when it all arrives.

I've only run it with a vinegar bath so far, but I am shocked at how silent it is. My nano skimmer on my 24g nuvo is 10x louder than this skimmer is. I could very faintly hear it in my office when I was sitting 6 feet away with nothing between me and it.

I can't comment on how well it works yet though.

I am going out of town for a few days with the family, but it looks like I will come back to the tank and sump being delivered! It is finally in the states after a paperwork problem held it at customs for a week. So Monday the 16th is the tentative delivery date. Hoping to have it wet by the weekend after.

Just got home from vacation. Tank delivery scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, and I am as ready as I could be at this point.

Also tested both of my rock tubs and got 0-0-0 readings in both with full diatom blooms in each one. Going to fill the tank halfway, mix salt, aquascape, lay sand, then fill the rest of the tank with water mixed in the brute cans. That should give me minimal die off and allow me to transfer livestock over the weekend if all goes well!

Just a suggestion: If you're going to try for a flash cut-over get some Instant Ocean's Bio-Spira or Dr. Tim's One & Only to ensure a safe and smooth transition.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave. Was planning on monitoring parameters for a few days to ensure the tank was ready, but this will be cheap insurance! :)
