The biggest "plus" for me as far as GFO goes is that just about every Tank-o-Month uses it. Good enough for me!
The issue WRT bleaching and die-off has to do with the sudden introduction of GFO in a tank containing relatively high phosphate concentrations. When the phosphate suddenly falls, the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) can die back, stressing the corals. It's not the GFO itself, but the drop in the phosphate levels.
