is it ok to run carbon on a tank with bubble tip anemones? has any body tried using chemipure? does anybody use any tipe of supplements or do i need to use any? thanks

forgot to add... how often do you guys do water changes? will weekly water changes hurt the anemone? the reason is am not planning to dose anything in the tank except for purple up and pretty much rely on water changes to replenish everything in the tank. thanks

Either activated carbon or chemipure is fine, in fact a good idea, to run with anemone. Supplements should be used only if you are testing for what you are adding. Alkalinity and calcium are commonly added supplements, but again, make sure you test before you add. If you do 10-20% water changes with a good quality salt, e.g., Instant Ocean or Reef Crystals, etc., then you will probably not need to add supplements. And yes, water changes are a good idea. Unless your source water is in good shape, you will want to use RO/DI water.

What other animals do you have, or plan to have? There is little reason to supplement for anemones. Frequent, large, and well matched water changes are a great way to keep them happy.

Skimming and Carbon are both excellent if not mandatory practices along with plenty of Live Rock and a refugium if possible to help control nutrients.

As far as salt brands go check out this thread.. it's long but a good read;

I personally don't think Oceanic is very good. Since Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals are readily available, I suggest you go with either of those.

thats wierd... i heard some bad stuff about IO and RC too. i've been using oceanic on my fowlr tank for about 18months. i just recently converted my tank to a reef. now, does it really matter that i use IO or RC instead of Oceanic? i mean i don't really mind switching (IO and RC are both cheaper) but am just a bit concerned since my system is already used to oceanic salt mix. am just afraid something wrong might happen and regret this.

There were some issues with the balance of alkalinity, Ca, Mg. However, theses are more the exceptions with IO, on the otherhand, Oceanic is consistently out of whack. I don't think you would have any problem switching to IO. Just do your normal water change regimen and switch to IO. Tropic Marin is another good brand. There is a brand new brand called D-D H2Ocean--you can purchase it through Marine Depot--and it is supposed to be good, but it's so new I don't think there are many reviews available.

Frankly, on a fowlr tank, you would probably be fine with Oceanic. Most fish aren't very picky about the chemistry, certainly not compared to most corals.

I have a 10 gallon BTA tank with two Ocellaris, and I do a weekly 20% water change with IO salt. No problems so far - coralline is starting to grow all over the bottom of my tank (bare bottom).
