care of elegance -retracted tenatacles

Also, how can you tell your Elegance is healthy? Or put another way, how can you tell if you have a problem? Do I need to feed the elegance? Thanks!

Thanks. What is the benefit of placing in the sand? Any other care tips like feeding..etc.? Most appreciated.

You run a pretty high risk of tissue damage when it expands if you keep it in the rocks. This usually leads to brown jelly/the coral's death.

Keep it on the sand, mine did well on the sand. I decided to place it up on the rock, next couple days didnt look so good. I tried placing it back in the sand and it never recovered, produced this slimy stuff that I think choked out coral because it wouldnt full open and just started to die... You will no when something is wrong with the elegance, but by that time there is hardly anything you can do to save it that is the problem with some elgeances. (You may have hurd of the elegance disease) You also dont need to feed it, but its recommended if you want it to grow. Good luck. (Also sometimes these corals tend to retract tentacles and puff up in order to try to expell waste, which causes owners to get worried)

Your elegance probably suffered from light exposure higher in the tank. Not the fact that it was on rocks. I've been keeping these corals on rocks for over twenty years. I've never had a problem I could associate with them being on rocks. They are even found on rocks in nature. This is an old myth that needs to die.

from my experiences only aussie elegance have a good survivabilty rate. i would personally never buy an indo elegance. it will die eventually

Just some follow up on my Aussie. I placed it in the rocks at first and after a week or so it didn't look that great. So I moved it to the sand and it now seems to be thriving. Let's hope this continues! Here is a picture.

I just got one two days ago. Darn, now I know it's an Indonesian. Researched about it in time to not sun burn it (at least not more than Petco did). I luckily turned the lights off during acclimation, then researched it. Had the lights shaded with cardboard but went to store and made a better shade. It didn't look to bad at the store but is now retracted. Now that I am confident in my shade, I was able to turn on all my HO T5's and it looks like it is starting to come out. Just a tiny bit of brown stuff coming out its tentacles (or whatever you call them) that seems to be gone now. Body not swollen. I think he might be fine, at least for now : (

By the way, I think that the first and maybe second ECs in pics are Indo and at least the last type posted is definitely an Aussie.

DO NOT FEED THEM KRILL!!! For some reason krill will eventually end there life. I have had my indo for 14 or so months. Power feed them silversides. I feed mine 2 full silversides 3 times a week. They will not do well on the rocks. Sand bed is a must.. My tank is LPS with strong lighting.. My Elegance is the size of approx 10 dinner plate.. This is just my experience with elegance and it works well..

Are you feeding each mouth? I'm guessing you are dicing them up. I'm asking because I have to feed mine manually now, since it has no tentacles left and very little algae that I can see. Mine was maybe 6 inches across when it was healthy, I was thinking 1/2 a silverside every few days, but I'll step it up now.

I attempt to feed each mouth. I cut 2 full silversides in half and use feeding tongs to feed him. I try to get all mouths feed but as he closes up to feed you really can't tell for sure. I feed ever other day and have since i got him. Here is a pic from this morning and i feed him last night. He has not fully extended yet as the lights just came on but my powder blue is in the shot and he is approx 6" long. Gives and idea of size and not fully extended yet. At mid day he fills the entire cavity between the rocks he is placed in. I do nothing special, good water, good lighting, and feed. He loves to eat. Just my opinion but reef keepers that elegance issues just don't feed enough.

He's a monster, everything in there looks great! I saw the other pic where it's fully inflated. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I need to get some tongs, I'm using a turkey baster now, but the silversides aren't going to fit. It probably wasn't getting enough food to really grow before so I think you are right about them generally not getting enough food.

Thought I would share my parameters with you as well.
Water change, 20% IO reef crystals every month.
SG 35ppt
PH 8.1 to 8.3
MAG 1500 +
ALK 10DKH
CALC 500 +or-
AMMONIA 0
NITRITE 0
NITRATE 10PPM
PHOSPHATE 0.05
TEMP 77 + OR - 1 DEGREE CLOSE AS I CAN KEEP IT (I find all my LPS do much better @ 77 than 80 degree range)

These parameters are where my LPS tank looks and does its best. Let me know how he comes along. Good Luck!
