Care to take a crack at the ID of my Ceph?

Purchased from Fishsupply.com as a Bimac, but I have my doubts. I have never been able to determine an exact species. I doubt it's a bimac due to it's lack of the eye spots.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Pictures are on my website.

hi Chris you can click on his link next to the profile, THE WWW house thingy :)

I dunno what it is but it looks a bit like that species I had last year, the one i tentatively called 'aculeatus'????

What do you think?

I recently purchased a bimac from fishsupply and none of your pictures look exactly like mine. I'm not saying that it's not a bimac, just that I saw nothing where I could say your's definitley was a bimac. Curious, did you speak with Jack and specifically ask for a bimaculoides?

Unfortunatly that was my mistake. I made note when I placed the order (Online order) and then again when they called to tell me they only had a large one in stock that I only wanted a Bimac. I failed to ask for Jack directly thinking that Jack should have shared his info with the rest of the people there.

While I am not totally dissapointed in my new Ceph, I am somewhat dissapointed in FishSupply for not supplying the specicies that they advertise.

I am in the process now of trying to email them and get a responce from them.

Beautiful octopus. You are lucky to have it. Please don't be upset with Jack or fish supply. We need to remember that octopuses are not like fish. They change texture, color and shape. With over 300 hundred species of octopus and no way of knowing where most of his octopuses were collected, it's hard to give exactly what the customer wants sometimes. If you are really currious and marvel at octopus, then you will have plenty of chances to own a bimac. What you won't always be able to do is get a unique species like the one you have now.
You may find the the behaviour of the species you have now, may be far more facinating than any bimac you keep in the future. Bimacs are cool, but there are a lot of species out there that most have never kept. With imports coming in all the time, you never know what you are going to get.
It could be a member of the horridus species complex. These octopus have some of the best camouflage of any octopus species. They tend to be day active due to their incredible camouflage ability.
Like Colin says, you could have O.aculeatus or you could have O.abaculus. They hail both from the philippines that are common collection areas. You could have a new species? Enjoy and keep us all posted on your new octopus!

Thaks for taking the time.

I am not too upset with FishSupply. I have always had an awesome experience with them and will always continue to use them. Like you said this gives my a chance to get to know a species that I may or may not ever run into again. And that is the cool thing about these amazing creatures. Each one is so different in personality.

I am just now seeing him come out while I am around and his lights are on. (Had him about 6 weeks) However, he does still appear to be a bit reclusive and reluctant to explore in the light. I am going to try to experiment with some red lighting and see how he takes to that.

Thanks again.
