Carpet troble!!

Well I've been reading alot and wanting a carpet for a while. My parameters stay stable Salinity 1.024, N,N,A,P all 0, Alk 10, Cal 420, Mg 1450. I ventured to Petco to finally buy a $27 carpet. It looked healthy. The only advise I didnt follow was to allow it to stay in the store and watch it for a minimum of a week both to make sure it shipped well and to not stress it with all the moves. Well today is day two it is not melting but its mouth goes from gapping to close to closed to inside out. Not sure whats happening. Below are just a few pics of what it looked like after a 3 hour drip acclimation. Advise please. I also dont have any shade over it as I didnt believe I would need it with T-5's. I dont have any current pics from today which is really why I was kinda worried. For what its worth the nem looked well up until about 6 pm so 10 hours into the light cycle.

It is hit and miss with carpets. A few suggestions one of which was not covered in your description would be to raise your salinity a bit. With success I have had with carpets over a decade I have always maintined a salinity of 1.025-1.026. Second is if you have any clowns in the tank (not shown in pic) try and keep them from hosting in the anemone until the mouth issues have stopped. Clowns can tend to add stess to a carpet when there are existing new mouth issues. Give it time and keep an eye on the expanding of the mouth. It takes some time for them to acclimate from shipping and going from one system to another. Best of luck.

Thanks I appreciate it. Ill def look into raising the salinity. for some reason I have always maintained 1.024 although every time I do a water change I make sure the salinity of the water is around 1.026-1.028 not sure exactly how that works out. I do have clowns but they are on the other side of the tank hosting a RBTA, GBTA and a frog.

T5s can absolutely bleach carpets, put some shade on it.
I agree that 1.026 is a good salinity to shoot for.

I would dig a hole in the sand at the base of your rockwork and try planting it there.

Nice anemone.

Looks like ill be headed to home depot here soon. I did dig a hole. Theres a rock close but my rocks arent to deep down in the sand. Ill play with it a little see if i can make him a little happier. Again the input is appreciated.

I actually don't think the mouth looks that bad. Mine looked just like that for the first couple days. I don't know if is recommended but I fed mine a piece of shrimp around day 4 and the mouth closed up tight after the feeding.

first couple of days are accimation days... keep the clowns away and let it adjust to its new home best thing that can be done is to leave it alone....

good luck gorgeous nem btw

Thanks for the input. I think I may have also messed up because somewhere I read feed it on the second day. Well I did and a piece of silver side at that and later I read that can kill them somehow. So he spit that out and now I'm just going to let him sit for a few days before getting again. He's looking a lot better than when I first posted this. But of course the hole I dug for him is now empty and he is pushed up behind the rocks in the shade with a smile on his face lol.

Well guys again its looking bad. What I've observed is at night with moon lights on it looks well. During the day it looks ok. Evening just actinics it looks bad again. Ill let you know if it looks well again with the moon lights on. Also I've added screen on top of the tank to shade it a bit and see if that helps. Granted my tank is tall so it still gets some light but i believe it should help. I'm using two screens folded in half so basically four layers.

Good luck with it hope it pulls through for you. On a unrelated note are you a 9E guy?

Was 9e awhile ago corporate now.

Well I've got to say good decision considering lol. On the topic of the carpet it looked great last night with the moon lights on and before I went to bed started looking bad again. Woke up today and it's still looking bad and also every now and again I see some white secreting from it. To add to this I've never had a cyano prob not sure it if releasing toxins or it was just my turn for it. Either way I believe if it doesn't look good for at least a second in an hour or so adios.

The RBTA & GBTA are probably not helping the situation. Also If it isn't melting away and still looks generally like the pics you posted in the begining give it some time to settle in. As long as the "guts" arent spilling out from the mouth or its not melting away the is still hope. It really doesn't look that bad from the few pics you posted maybe getting a few more updated ones will help.

Thanks for the help unfortunately I had to get rid of it. It was almost completely inside out and you could see white ozing of off it every now and then which i interpreted as melting. I guess someday ill have to try again. The rbta and gbta are on the opposite side of the tank. For future ref will they still cause a carpet to melt ?

I don't believe that the BTA's actually caused the carpet to melt, more along the lines of adding more stress to an already stressed out animal. There are many instances of haddoni's not settling in with BTA's in the tank.

Huh ok well thanks for that info. I didn't think they would affect it. I'll have to figure out a better technique to try this again because I really love the carpets
