carpet vs. bubble tip nem?

Hello everyone. I am in the market for an anemone. Dr Mac @ Pacific East has some GREAT deals going on. He has a few 8inch electric green carpet anemones which i think are great and he also has a bunch of green bubble tips. This will be my first anemone so i am wondering what you would pick. Thanks!

typically the carpet has a much stronger sting then the BTA. If you plan to have other small fish or shrimp in the tank, I'd lean toward the BTA as the carpets can sting hard enough to catch them.

well i have two tangs, two ocellaris clowns, a 3 stripe damsel, goby and 3 chromis...

the goby may end up as lunch with a carpet

I will add though - carpets and other nems are know to loose some sting after being in aquariums for a while

I replied to your other thread.

Which tank, the 10 or the 75?

What are you lights?

But, if this is your first attempt with anemones I would suggest going with the BTA.

Was type was the carpet? gigantea, haddoni, or mertensii? I would guess Haddoni since there seems to be a lot of green ones lately.

EDIT, just looked at their site, looks like a Haddoni to me.

For a first anemone i would recommend the BTA because they are hardy and need less lighting than the carpet and also they are not know to eat fish like the carpet. I may add that the BTA splits often which can be nice if you decide to keep them or give them to fellow reefers where as the carpet just gets huge.

I have a bta and after keeping it for 6mths i've decided they get to big as well. Its hogging my 125g tank. When i first got it, it was 3-4". 6mths later its huge and is to the point where its close to stinging corals around it so i'm not sure what to do. I think i'm going to put it in my 75g frag tank and move alot of things around and hope it starts splitting. So if you do get a bta, be prepared for it to getting 12+ " s

But that is the problem with all hosting anemones. :)

Both of my Haddonis are well over a foot across, my LTA that was 3" a couple of months ago has more then doubled in size.

The last BTA that I sold was at least 15" across.

I saw the green carpets that you mentioned and they are really attractive. Your lighting is more than enough for either one. As others have mentioned, it you have any space constraints in your tank I think the BTA would be the safe choice since there is a better chance of it splitting. That green carpet is very vibrant though :)

Dang it, I clicked on this thread hoping for pics from a fight! J/K! IMO, I think that a BTA would be better just for aesthetic purposes. They're a little "busier" than carpets. Also, I've heard they're not as sensitive to water conditions and lighting as others.

Note my Current Tanks list. Those Haddoni carpets will do a great job of removing the fish from your tank for you.

I doubt if the ocellaris will take up residence in one. You might want to try the clown/anemone forum.
