Carpet

I asked the guy at the pet store what kind of anemone I should start out with. He told me a small carpet anemome, but I thought carpets were one of the harder anemones to keep?

The type of anemone you can start out with greatly depends on the type of tank you have, the lighting, and the water flow. The are probably something you don't want to start putting in your tank right away without having your feet wet with saltwater tanks. Carpet anemones are far from being small. The Anemone FAQ has tons of info on Anemones, here is what it had to say on difficulty requirements:

DIFFICULT
E. quadricolor (bulb-tentacle anemone, BTA, or corn anemone)
S. haddoni (haddon's sea anemone, saddleback anemone, carpet anemone, or sand carpet)
MORE DIFFICULT
M. doreensis (long tentacle anemone, LTA, or corkscrew tentacle sea anemone)
C. adhaesivum (adhesive sea anemone or pizza anemone)
H. aurora (beaded sea anemone or sand anemone)
H. crispa (long tentacle anemone, LTA, leathery sea anemone, or milk anemone)
H. malu (sebae anemone, delicate sea anemone, or sand anemone)
MOST DIFFICULT
H. magnifica (magnificent sea anemone, ritteri, or skunk anemone)
S. gigantea (gigantic sea anemone or carpet anemone)

....Man, some LFS employees keep getting dumber and dumber..

I see you have a 2.5 gal. nano...sooo, no anemone is good to start with until you get a bigger tank and you can succesfully keep a fish only tank with zero to minimal losses. I read you just got that 2.5 gal. to "see" if you liked the hobby...so, i'd make sure you like it first before you attempt to purchase an anemone. There are MANY (and i mean MAAANNYY) things to learn before even thinking about getting an anemone (lighting, flow, care, etc..)..

The best thing would have been if you would have started with a bigger tank (bigger than 2.5 gal.) ..Tanks that size are even harder at times than keeping a much bigger tank.
