Catch Flame Angel

Any ideas on how to catch a flame angel? It stays near to the rockwork all the time and also sleeps in the rockwork.

Drain the water and catch the fish or use a real trap. Any fish that takes prepared food a trap should work

Get a fish trap and put a mirror in the back. Most fish that are some what agressive will think you have put another in the tank and go after the reflection.

I have caught may fish without even baiting the trap. Another thing that can be helpful is to leave the trap in the tank for a couple of days and let them "play" so they are comfortable going in and out. Doing this makes them less spooky when its time to go up to the tank and shut the door.

Good luck,
Julie

That was great advice!!!!! I put a mirror in the back of my homemade trap and 10 mins later when I pulled the trap I had the flame angel, a yellow tank and a hippo tang. LOL. The flame angel is now sitting in my LFS's tank

Thank you so much for your help.

Will be trying this next week when I get back from a trip. I'm about done with this flame nipping stuff & bullying the clowns.

Awesome idea with the mirror. I've always had success with just getting a decent sized container and bating the fish into it with food and just scooping them out.

I will give the mirror idea a try too on a couple butterfly's I need to catch. Do you guys have any pictures of your traps?

Just out of curiosity peiloy,

what was the issue with your flame? I've been considering picking one up for awhile now for my mixed tank.. I know they have a bit if a reputation w nippin but I've successfully kept a coral beauty with no problems either.. Just curious

congrats on catching him too, the mirror trick is one I need to remember

Glad to help. I can't take credit for it being an original idea, but if it works....

I have a coral beauty that just killed off a porcillapora (sp) nipping at it. They also have the reputation of being aggressive towards other angels.

I will take a picture of my crude trap tonight and post it:D

Origianlly the flame was a model citizen, but then one day i cam home with a red open brain.....well lets just say he ate well that night. He literally ripped it to shreds. Since then he would constantly pick at my SPS. He never actually damaged them but the polyp extension was reduced. I also love brains so I figured I needed to get him out before i tried another.

I have never had luck with traps and not for lack of trying. Never heard the mirror tip. Thats definitly something I will try in the future!

Whatever method you use, it is always a good idea to avoid using a net.

When the weight of a fish is on a net, a break in the mucous or worse the skin can be the entry point for bacteria.

I tend to think that a good fraction of bacteria infections is the result of using a net to catch fish.

A trap, the late night special, biting the bullet (removing rearranging all aquascape) and using a large clear plastic bag slowly to corner a fish are some ways.

This what I made and I can catch just about any fish

believe it or not, a tiny barbless hook baited with shrimp or squid is probably the least impacting way to catch a fish. I have done this several times and I have caught the wrong fish, let him shake the hook lose and hes back for more within 10 seconds like it never happened. Just have a holding container at the rim of the tank and quickly hoist him in. Give the line slack and the fish will easily shake it loose.

And the added benefit is its fun!
