Caulerpa and photoperiod

What triggers Caulerpa to release gametes? I have not had this problem since I switched to 24 hour lighting a year and a half ago.
 
I have been advised that they won't if you go to 24hour light. No idea why, but it's worked for me so far.
 
the usually reproduce an hour after the lights come on when they're ready to "pop." if the lights stay on then they won't have that 1 hour after lights come on... they'll just always be on. atleast, that's what i've heard.
