Caulerpa meltdown?

A week ago this past weekend, my 125 gal reef tank was doing great. Chemistry, corals and fish all looking wonderful. Monday, I got home from work and all the coral are closed up, the skimmer is going crazy, and there is foam in the sump as well. The fish did not seem bothered. I did an emergency water change of 30 gal Monday and Tuesday night. After the second water change, I checked the chemistry and the only things off were the PO4 at 0.20 and the magnesium at 1125 ppm. I changed the PO$ media and started correcting the Mg++.

It wasn't until a few days later that I noticed that all the Caulerpa in the sump was "gone". Not dead, but gone- likely disintegrated. But, Im not sure if this is cause or effect? I have never had my Caulerpa die like this. I keep it illuminated 24/7.

A week + later, my T. derasea has died, the soft corals are still withdrawn and/or closed, my chalice, Favia, and brain corals are fine, and the fish are fine.

any thoughts?

It looks like your Caulerpa went sexual and nuked the tank. It released all its nutrients into the water and your T.Derasea wasnt able to take the excess nutrients. Soft corals are trying to process it.

Try a few more water changes.

As above, try chaeto in the sump, does the same nutrient export but won't go sexual. If you stay with caulerpa try keeping it well trimmed, and run lights in sump 24 hours/ day. Same thing happened to me several years ago, and it was a cascading mess. Had to take apart and clean everything

This is one of the dangers of having caulerpa in the sump where you either can't see it or are less likely to notice when it goes sexual. It usually turns pale right before it melts and I was always able to yank it before it made a complete mess of things.

Water changes and clean ups are what you need to do now.

I run both Caulerpa and Cheato but definitely limit the amount of Caulerpa I keep for this reason, I have lots of algae eaters in my tank and they love to munch on the excess Caulerpa :-)

I agree with BlueCat1949. Caulerpa in the display, where you can keep an eye on it. Chaeto and ulva in the sump/refugium.
