CaveMan's 240 Gal with 2-29 gl. Specific Tanks

Ok, here is my new plan for the basement. I have added a 30 gallon Macro Algae tank, moved the Cryptic fuge to the to and changed one of the Rubbermaids to a frag tank. Sump is on the bottom. (Thank you very much for hollback for the one on one chat about my first plan.)

jh2pizza: you are right, I may change that to a two line drain. How ever I haven't even broke the new's to Mrs. Caveman that there will be 3- 2" hole's in the floor. :eek1: But then what's one more.

Thank's every one for all the nice comments and advice given, keep it coming.

This looks really cool.

Will the sh and angler tanks be visable from the outside...along with the 240, or will they be tucked away?
What are your plans for a stand.

I'm going to wrap the ends and front of the stand with oak ply the really thin stuff. then cut out the sh & angler tank spaces in the front to the same size of the tank glass. They will be one sided view. I've painted the sides and back of the 29's. the 240 is only painted on the back. how ever it will only be a 2 sided view since one end will be up against the wall in the corner. I didn't paint that end since it is Star Fire Glass, didn't want to risk scratching it in the future if I wanted the paint removed. Then the lighting on the two 29's below will be lit by t-5's.

It all look's good on paper, pulling it off will be the challenging part.

Wow! :)

Thats sounds like its going to look pretty slick.
Are you woried that the "thin stuff" is going to crack?

I think I read the diagram correctly, why bother pumping to the 2 29 gallons.... why not just tie them into the overflows of the large tank... I mean obviously not the full flow but gated back... then have them overflow to the sumps.... just my .02c I am sure someone will tell me why this wont work... I just figured why bother hurting your return flow.

you would then be feeding the 29s with dirty water from the display instead of the filtered clean water from the sump...
that is my guess

Yeah i guess.... I mean I like to think my entire system is one body of water... also for pod population there would not be a pump between the pods in the display or fuge they would freeflow into seahorse tank

I have an idea.
to solve the "feeding dirty water" problem.

Why not have a hidden sump that you filter your water from the display tank in, before it enters the sh and angler tanks. That way both systems would have clean water. ---just a thought.

I would rather have all the tank's go into the sump and filter through the system and return back into them.
In some way's I think it would be more difficult to get a good flow through the two 29's if I fed them through the drain's. And I don't want any power head's in either of them.

But it is a good idea jjackson.

Keep the suggestions coming. ;)

yeah and bubbles..... just thought of that when I looked in my sump

Thats true.
Maybe you should seperate part of the 29 out for a buble trap. Epecially for sh. If you dont use a sump to minimize the bubbles, put the angler tank first in line before the sh tank. Sh hate bubbles. :)

Well I've been able to get back to work on the 240 Project. Right now I have all the framing for the Fish Room complete. I still need to finish some painting and put the Plywood Decking on. I think it will hold some weight.

The only other framing to do is add the 2x12's to the floor trusses and build another shelf system like the one seen for Mixing vats and Pure water tank.

Slowly but surely I'm getting there.

Alright been a busy couple of days. Getting a little closer, hopefully this will be complete soon.
Any way's here are some new pictures of the basement set up and closed loop system.

I've have found just like with Construction of houses every thing looks good on paper. We've now pretty much scrapped all drawings.

First lets start with the basement
This picture shows all the tanks & stuff in place. Starting with the top row Left side side is 30gl long for macro, Right side is 50gl RM for Macro. Second shelf Left side is 75gl for Cryptic Fuge, Right side is 100gl RM frag tank. And next to Frag tank is my GEO Calcium Reactor. Bottom Left side is 2-25gl sections most likely another frag tank, Right side is 100gl RM sump.

The main return pump will be behind the sump(Hammer Head), the 2 CLS pumps(Hammer Heads) will be on the top shelf behind the 50gl RM. There will also be a smaller pump to pull water out of the tank left of the sump since it would be a negative grade from there to the sump.

This wall is where the Rack will be built for the Mixing tanks and Pure water tank as well as some equipment. The RODI will be relocated. I also plan on moving the W/D down some to make room for a double utility sink.

Now on to the Closed Loop system. With this I took the left side and brought it out closer to the front of the tank then angled it back towards the back on the right end of it. Then with the right side I left a lot more space between it and the front of the glass so the there will be a nice size sand bed at the one end.

Here is a picture of the left side

Next will be the electrical work.

Everything looks awesome! I was wondering if you have any issues with your sump pump being behind your 100g sump? What about access?

There is actually enough room back behind there for me to get to it. Plus having caving experience makes it no problem at all. I will have to take a picture so I can show that. The other nice thing about where the Sump is located is right behind it is also my sump pit so water changes will be easy. I plan on running a dump line right into it.

Thank you for the positive comment.

Let me go a head and get some opinions about pipe size.
For the Closed Loop I have 2" suction line, it will reduce to 1.5" at the pump. For the return back to the tank I was going to run 1.5" to the tank and reduce to 1" inside the tank.
Question, would any of you use 2" returns and reduce to 1" inside the tank? I guess the same question could go with the Main return line from the Sump as well. It to will be 2" from the tank to 1.5" into the pump and 1.5" out of the pump to 1" in the tank.
The riser height for the CLS pumps are roughly 8'-10' from basement to tank And the Main return pump is 12'-14' from basement to tanks.
