Today Rainer, Dave C and I got together for a little diy project. We drilled out one of my 38 gal tanks and I figured I would share it with everyone.

First, all the things used to complete the procedure.

One of the most important pieces of equipment for an undertaking like this. We all had eyeprotection on.

Here is the initial set up. First I measured to where I wanted the hole to be. Then I traces the bulkhead with a sharpe marker to make the circle where I was going to drill. Built a water dam with plumbers putty. Then put duct tape underwhere I would be drilling the hole.

Here is what the plumbers putt container look like.

We filled up the dam and started to drill, following all the advice given on this thread.

It was a little nerve wracking at first but once it got going it wasn't hard. Here is the final result.

Jaze...............well that was a dumb idea !

Now when you fill the tank all the water will run out of that hole.

sheesh ! what a ma-roon ! DUH DUH DUH ! :p

did you use a steel bit or a diamond one? Willing to pass it around for a couple $ ? I knew a guy who paid for his in no time this way, and lots of peeps appreciated it.

A diamond one, I'll post a pic of it when I get home. I got it off of ebay for 9.50 includeing shipping. I have one more tank to drill then anyone is willing to borrow it(no charge, frags might be nice if possible, if not no biggie), I would be willing to even do it for the person if need be. One thing I did read on a thread is the bit I bought is only good for a half inch of glass before they are no longer useable. I guess when I get to that point it will be time to make an evaluation.

I got the bit from this guy
