CF lighting for a SPS tank ?

Well MV for deeper tanks but will work on any by adjusting hieght. SPS can survive With well maintained PC tank and with t-5 may do better ( reccomend with a mix of coral ). But MH and MV SPS coral thrive.

Hahahaha good luck! CF lighting and SPS screams failure.

LOL. He's researching and needs positive and informal replys. Save that for idiots who ask after they bought 500.00 bucks worth while running CF. :)

I'm honestly not here to baby anyone. I gave him my honest opinion, and am not looking to offend anyone. I have personal experience with that combination, and trust me, it's not a good try. Move along now, Demon.

Move on yourself. Im the same way.But RC is here for people like him who want to do it right , ask questions and make an educated choice. I think you just like seeing other people make the same mistake you did.

This is my last reply, i swear mod's. :lmao: I don't want to waste any more of my time.

Your remark of me liking to see other people make the same mistake i made is completely off base. If i did enjoy seeing people make the same mistake, why did i direct him away from it.

Anyways, kids will be kids i guess.

If you must have sps and CF together, your best bet is to get the coral literally AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the lighting. It's your only chance.

Yes. I have a 54 x 8 t-5 light and SPS'S do live and grow but not as well as i wanted and wished i bought MH. I spent so much on the t-5's im going to use a while but will upgrade to MH later. But if you have the money and are serious about a SPS only tank then buy the best light you can afford.

Well thanks for the information from most of the people that replied. I have T5 and MH both on other tanks I was just asking if it was possible to do with CF and SPS...

I'm sure it's possible......to maybe keep them alive under CF. But in my experience, they all brown very quickly and will show no growth whatsoever.

In your case i'd go with t-5 if you're on a budget. If you look, you can find them cheaper than cf. Make sure you have a ton of flow though..

fwiw, I've had thriving sps under T-5's, they work just fine for sps. T5's can and do put out plenty of light intensity for this purpose. And yes you can have SPS under CF lights as well, but for a 75g tank, I doubt you would be able to pull it off to the extent you are wanting. The tank wouldn't be sps dominated since all sps would have to be right at the surface with alot of intense CF bulbs over them. If you were talking about a 20g long or smaller, you'd probably stand a better chance since the tank is so shallow, but anything deeper, wouldn't even waste the time/effort/money to attempt.

Well it looks like everyone worked out their differences which is a nice change, but i have to add zma21, that this IS the new to the hobby forum. This is where people are supposed to be coddled! :) I agree though, if you bought an sps frag and kept it under CF for a year or two... you would probably be left with the same size sps frag. :)

You are correct, this is the new to the hobby forum. However, the member with the problem is not new to the hobby, and besides that i wasn't disrespectful in any manner. All i said was good luck and it will probably end in failure. Guess i'll take my ''hard nosed'' attitude elsewhere. :lmao:

I am not new to saltwater(fish only) But very new to coral or reef tanks. I was just asking about CF for lighting over a reef tank. I know that MH is the best which I have a 75 now that has 2-250 watt MH's however I was thinking of starting another tank and have a 260 watt CF that came with it and I thought I would ask about using this but I guess I have learned that they are not the way to go for reef tanks and I will put CF up for sale and use the money from the sale and some from my pocket to buy a different lighting system maybe even T5 lol

P.S. zma21 I did not have a problem just simply a question!

Mecury Vapor ? Really ?

Seriously... I don't think anyone uses mercury vapor. Where'd that come from?

Its only what i learned from researching. Its used on deep tanks mostly and im sure there some you use it.
