I hope I didn't sound like I was suggesting that QT isn't necessary for fish that are touch and go - they need it the most!
with fish that are delicate/vulnerable/young, they always need to be isolated in an established QT/growout tank until healthy and feeding reliably.
several years ago, I "grew out" an emperor angel subadult and a 2" spotted rabbitfish in my 55. the 55 was full of zoanthids and other soft corals. angel decimated them. but I was happy that the fish was eating, fat and happy. Elvis (the King) is now about 8-9" in my 210, swimming around with his buddy the rabbitfish, who is nearly as big. I don't think either fish would have made it, had I put them in the regular DT.
later, when I "QT'd" a rare color morph dogface puffer in this same tank, my puffer decimated every single mushroom the angel had left. there were hundreds. but the puffer was/is healthy, and that was what mattered.
