I think it is a good idea to flip over the ball twice a week or the algae on the bottom will start to die, trim it when the ball starts to get compressed in the area its growing.
Actually, my chaeto has never tumbled. I light it from both above and below so it's not really a problem. I just remove some when it gets too tightly packed.

toothybugs nailed it. Sump is in the basement, and is elevated 24" off the floor. Multiple benefits. Allows me to bottom light the fuge, more easily siphon water from the sump, and puts a bit less head pressure on the pump.
Mine never tumbles but is doing well. As long as it's getting decent flow passing through it bringing nutrients and CO2 to it, it should be ok, but like someone posted, it'd be good to turn it over once a week or so.
mine is growing in a basket. At the end if my Fuge. it does not tumble either. But once a week sometimes twice i will raise the basket out of the water a few times to let anything that has settled rinse off.. You can see the pods run wild for the sand bed in the fuge... I Also get bristle worms in those baskets.. just hanging around in the strands...
