Chaeto question

I have had problems in the past with my chaeto growth stalling out. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Does chaeto die? If so, does it stay green, or does it melt away? I always assumed if it was still green, it was still alive.

Follow up question... Anyone trimming their chaeto anytime soon? I could use a small handful.
