Chaeto?

I was reading the thread from a few days ago about chaeto. Just seeing if anyone has some thats available, I'm not as worried about the pods, more or less just for the nutrient export values. I'd like to update some pics of the tank, but it looks like crap right now. Cyano everywhere, I think it was water movement issues. When I origanlly plumbed the tank, I think the tubing was too small and got plugged somehow. I redid everything this last weekend with come 1/2 inch pvc, ball valves, ect, water movement was greatly increased. We'll just have to sit back a bit and see what happens.

What kind of water movement system do you have? filtration? Cyano definately is a result of poor water movement in a particular area (Dead spots) you might try some other powerheads or relocating your nozzles to increas flow in those areas. Cheato will export phosphates and nitrates, which is what micro algae feed on.

Ive read that it is good to have strong circulation directed at chaeto. I have a ball in my refugium that is slowly growing. I need to get a powerhead in there and aim it at the ball. I have heard that it is supposed to grow very quickly under the right conditions.

No, it is suppose to gently tumble in your fuge. It will grow quickly with the right light and enough nutrients like N and P.

Murf, I do agree with the low water flow. I'm positive that was the major issue. I redid the plumbing and I can tell the movement was increased a lot. A few days later, the cyano is starting to pull off the sand. My wife actually got into pulling some of the floating crap out, she finally getting into this hobby also, about time... As far a pumps, I have to VA 480's for main circulation, and I threw in a Fluval 2 plus filter, for supplimental filtration, started as a temporary idea, just havent removed it yet. It has a carbon pad and some poly filter in it. I test my nitrates every couple of days and they always read at or near zero, never has been an issue.

Post up some pics, its easier to get a handle on what it looks like if we can see it. Use photobucket.com and it will post right in the thread, if you use the IMG tagline.
